Wild Arms 20th Anniversary

Today marks the 20th anniversary of Wild Arms in North America. It released for the original PlayStation on April 30, 1997, which was just four months after the Japanese debut back in December. Wild Arms is a Western themed turn-based RPG. The title of Wild is an obvious call out to the Wild West genre while ARMS, Ancient Relic Machines, are actually special weapons in the game. The overall plot follows Rudy, Jack, and Cecilia who are basically adventurers on the planet of Filgaia. That’s the very basic premise anyway.

It was one of the PS1’s earliest RPGs and predated the North American launch of Final Fantasy VII by a few months (April-September). And that’s just a taste of Wild Arms’ history. I delve deeper in the accompanying video retrospective plus I included all the release dates below as well. Enjoy!

Kirby 25th Anniversary Retrospective

This month is Kirby’s 25th anniversary. The little pink puff debuted on the Game Boy on April 27, 1992 with Kirby’s Dream Land in Japan. It later released that same year in August for North American and European territories. Strangely enough Kirby’s pink color scheme was muted in those two areas as a white puff instead, which was later corrected from the next game going forward. That’s just a taste of the fun little factoids I packed into my two part video retrospective on Kirby. I also included a list of the games and their corresponding release dates below. Enjoy!

PS4 Review: Flinthook

Flinthook stars a savvy young pirate, of the same name, looking to take on the nefarious Cluster Clan. Past this somewhat simple premise Flinthook is a roguelike very similar in the vein of Rogue Legacy in that it emphasizes platforming. Does this platformer roguelike expand the genre into a new galaxy, or does it fall into a black hole like Mass Effect Andromeda? Find out in my review. Enjoy!

Special Notes: I received a PS4 review code for Flinthook. The game is now available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

PS4 Review: Yooka-Laylee

Yooka-Laylee is by and large the spiritual successor to Banjo-Kazooie. Playtonic Games, comprised of ex-developers from Rare, created a Kickstarter in 2015 with the hopes of revitalizing platformers. Does this Nintendo 64 inspired game have what it takes to renew interest in the genre, or is it a nostalgia trip not worth taking? Find out in my video review. Enjoy!

Special Notes: I received a PS4 review code for Yooka-Laylee. The game will launch on April 11 for the PS4, Xbox One, PC, Linux, and Mac.

PS4 Review: Bulletstorm Full Clip Edition

Bulletstorm Full Clip Edition is more or less an enhanced port of the original 2011 version. Along with increasing the technical side of things it includes DLC plus an extra Duke Nukem campaign. Is this just another quick PS4 port for cash, or is it something more? Let’s find out in my video review. Enjoy!

Special Notes: I received a PS4 review code for Bulletstorm Full Clip Edition.

Monthly Gaming Recap: March 2017

March was the first big month for me this year. It’s not like I ever stopped working, but yeah, I put in my time for March not just in writing, but game time too. It was exhausting, but I loved it, but I’m also starting to feel fatigued and that I need a gaming break, which won’t happen anytime soon with Persona 5 and several others launching in April. This yeah has been phenomenal so far.

Anyway in the video update I go over my time with March’s biggest games including Horizon Zero Dawn, Ghost Recon Wildlands, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, NieR: Automata, Everything, and Mass Effect Andromeda. Plus there are links below to everything I published last month too. Enjoy!
